✨ Looking Beyond the Illusions ✨

During yesterday's half-day, Greenville High School students experienced Tom Coverly’s Destroy Illusions assembly! Through humor, illusions, and powerful stories, Tom challenged students to look beyond the “illusions” they face every day and recognize their own self-worth and purpose.

At the heart of his message was one powerful word: RESPECT.
🙌 Respect yourself
🤝 Respect others
💛 Choose kindness
🌟 Make choices that positively impact those around you

It was also wonderful to have our entire GPS staff together for Tom’s inspirational message during afternoon professional development! 📚✨ Tom did an amazing job blending illusions and humor with a meaningful message that reminded us of the important role we play in our students’ lives each day.

One elementary staff member shared: “Loved the district-wide Magic Show. It actually was a talking point during our PLC data review.”

What a great reminder that meaningful messages can spark conversations that continue long after the assembly ends!

Odyssey of the Mind - Informational Session
Due to the extreme heat forecast, a high heat index in classrooms, and limited air conditioning in our buildings and buses, Greenville Public Schools will dismiss early today (Wednesday, September 2, 2026).

Greenville Middle School will release at 11:40 AM, Greenville High School will release at 11:45 AM, and all GPS Elementary Schools will release at 1:05 PM.

Lunches will be provided at each school before dismissal.

Children’s Corner childcare will remain open at all four elementary schools until their normal closing time (6:00 PM).

This decision was made with safety as our top priority. We appreciate your understanding and continued support as we prioritize the safety and well-being of our students and staff.

Stay safe, cool, and hydrated, Yellow Jackets!

Cedar Crest Elementary (and Walnut Hills Elementary) was named as a Bright Spots Top School, an award that recognizes schools across the country that are beating the odds in literacy education. The Bright Spots Project highlights schools where students are thriving, and specifically, where third-grade literacy scores are outpacing expectations. Congratulations to our students, families and the staff who are working so hard for literacy achievement!

This morning we had several questions about health guidelines and when to know if a child should come to school versus stay home. Below are our health policies and ways to call in an absence. If your child does not have a fever, has not vomited or had two bouts of diarrhea in the past 24 hours, please send them to school. We want their smiling faces here :-)

📚✨ The Science of Reading at GPS!

A new Michigan law is bringing changes to reading instruction across the state—but at Greenville Public Schools, these practices are not new. Our teachers have already been using the Science of Reading approach for several years, using explicit, evidence-based instruction to help students build strong foundational reading skills.

Recently, 13 ON YOUR SIDE visited Cedar Crest Elementary to speak with first-grade teacher Keriann Poquette, who shared how this approach helps students become confident, capable readers.
