Clubs & Organizations

Running Club

Running club was created to improve the health and wellness of our students.  Each year we have several 4th and 5th grade students who stay after school 2 days a week (Mondays and Thursdays until 4:30pm) all year long and run in all sorts of weather conditions to improve the quality of their health and have fun.  Mr. Hoenshell and Mrs. Anderson coach the running club in the hopes that students will participate in the annual Yellow Jacket Challenge in April.

Robotics Club

The Baldwin Heights Robotics Club is made up of 5th grade students who show an aptitude and an interest in computer code writing.  Students use the comprehensive Wonder Workshop curriculum and lesson plans aligned to Common Core and NGSS standards designed for teachers by teachers. The lessons cover math, science, ELA, coding, and more.  Dash & Dot are robotic characters that ignite curiosity and confidence while providing fun ways of learning the essential skills of collaboration, communication, and digital literacy.  Students learn the basics of computer programming to operate robotic characters using an iPad. Mr. Hoenshell leads the group on Tuesdays after school for 3 nine-week sessions.

Odyssey of the Mind

OM is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college. Team members apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics. They then bring their solutions to competition on the local, state, and World level. Thousands of teams from throughout the U.S. and from about 25 other countries participate in the program. At Baldwin Heights we have SEVERAL teams participate at the regional tournament right here in Greenville.  If teams place high enough at the regional tournament they move on to State and World competition.  For more information please visit:  http://www.odysseyofthemind.com/.

WBHE (News Crew)

WBHE is the name of our school news broadcasting team led by Mr. Hoenshell.  5th grade students must submit an application and go through an interview process to be part of this team.  Participants come early in the morning to prepare the live broadcast seen by the whole school to report out important events, announcements, and even the weather.  Students gain experience in front of the camera as anchors and behind the scenes as "techies" in charge of sound and video productions.  Mr. Hoenshell starts looking for quality applicants early in the fall and students join a monthly rotation for the year.

Safety Patrol

The Greenville Safety Council sponsors this important group of students who sacrifice their time before and after school to keep our students safe.  Mrs. Aittama is the Safety Patrol Adviser for Baldwin Heights and selects a special group of 5th grade students to stand at street corners to help students cross safely, guide students at the main entrance, assist aides on the playground, and walk kindergarten students to their buses safely.  Students must be responsible individuals who can problem solve and remain calm in difficult situations.  Safety Patrol students must be trustworthy and provide a positive example for the entire school.
